In this step-by-step training, I will teach you everything I know about marketing and selling art. I’ll share the exact steps I took to sell 6-figures worth of art in one calendar year – skills I continue to use in my business today.
Hi, Rachel Wilkins here – artist, business owner, award-winning entrepreneur and host of the Smart Art Business Podcast. I help artists build sustainable businesses. I have had the pleasure of working with over 5,000 artists both in the U.S. and internationally. I have grown a thriving business and sold over six-figures of my own personal artwork. Over the years, I have made it my business to learn all I can about the various nuances of art business and marketing.
At 26, I left my corporate job and moved to New York City. A serendipitous series of events brought me to Manhattan and allowed me to switch gears and focus on what I loved most – creating art. After several months I had a collection of work that I was proud of, and so, with gallery representation in mind, I decided to hit the streets with my portfolio. What followed was a massive disappointment. I was repeatedly rejected and even had a door closed in my face. It was crushing. I was left feeling defeated and ready to throw the towel in.
Finally, after several months, a gallery in Chelsea agreed to give me a spot in an upcoming group show. I was elated, it had finally happened, I had my work in a New York City gallery – I had arrived! When the big night came, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment – the show was a flop. It was an anticlimactic end to a frustrating year of fruitlessly chasing my dream. This time, I was really done.
Then something happened…. A shift…I thought to myself one night, why do I need a gallery? What’s stopping me from selling my work directly to clients? In the next 12-months, I did everything in my power to prove to myself that I could be successful without the galleries. The following year, I had a solid understanding of who my ideal clients were and how to reach them, and, I sold over six-figures of artwork. I don’t share this story with you to say, oh hey, look how great I did. I share it because I truly believe that we, as artists, do not need gallery representation to be successful. I have spent the last decade helping other artists realize their true potential and helping them to also connect with their perfect customers.
